IMPORTANCE AND LOCATION OF POOJA ROOM
Pooja room in a house ensures positive energy. This positive energy has a great impact on the physical and mental health of the residents. The benefits of positive energy can be obtained only when the pooja room is designed as per Vastu Sastra. As per Vastu Sastra, the pooja room should be at the north-east corner of the house. If north-east corner could not be provided, either the east or the north is the second best location. Directions other than this should be avoided.
CORNER OR NICHE
If a separate room is not allocated for pooja, then a small corner or niche in the hall or any other room can be utilised to install a small pooja cabinet. In that case, that pooja cabinet should have a door and the door should be kept closed when pooja is not done. Pooja room should not be placed within the bedroom or kitchen. It should not be under the stairs. It should not be above or below or next to toilet or kitchen.
GROUND FLOOR
According to Vastu Sastra, the pooja room should be in the ground floor. It is not advisable to have the pooja room either in the basement or in a higher floor of the house.
FLOORING
Among the various types of natural stones, marble is most suitable for pooja room flooring. It should be white or cream toned marble. If marble cannot be used for cost reason, then white tiles may be used.
DOOR AND WINDOW
The door of the pooja room should be in the north-east direction. The door should be wooden and it should have two shutters. The door should not have any door closer. Additionally, the doorway should have a threshold so as to prevent insects from entering the room. Outside the pooja room, there may be a window and that window should also be in north-east direction to optimise the natural light entering the room.
COLOUR OF THE WALLS
The ideal colours for the pooja room walls are white, pale yellow or light blue. Dark colours should be avoided.
LIGHTING
The lighting should be done with care. Since the pooja room should have a tranquil vibe, it is better to stay away from focus lights or spotlights or bright lights and instead there should be ambient lighting. The objective of lighting should be to highlight the images of god without overpowering the room with brightness.
CUPBOARD
The pooja room can have a cupboard. The cupboard should be wooden and it should be positioned in the western side of the pooja room. Only pooja related utensils and materials should be stored in that cupboard. Obsolete things should not be kept in the cupboard.
IMAGES AND IDOLS OF GOD
The images and idols of gods and goddesses must be in proportion with the area of the room. The pooja room should have a serene ambiance. Cluttering it with too many images or idols will create visual distraction and interfere with the calmness of the room. It is all right to have idols and images of different gods and goddesses as per the will and wish of the residents but more than one image or idol of the same god should be avoided. The idols and images should be in good condition and free from cracks or blemishes.
CLEANLINESS AND SMELL
Since the pooja room is a sacred place, it should be kept clean always. It should be orcs and clutter free. The images and idols of god, utensils and other pooja related materials should be kept clean always. The floor should be mopped daily. There should be good smell in the pooja room so as to ensure positive vibration and mental peace to the residents.
